If you wish to point a domain name that you have to another domain address or subdomain, a good way to do this would be to use a CNAME record. By setting up such a record, the domain being redirected loses all of its records (A, MX, and so on) and instead, it takes the A record of the domain it is pointed to. This way, if you are using a web design service by some provider that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain and not only will it be redirected to the Internet site that you've set up, but it'll also be displayed in the browser address bar at all times. Some other possible uses of a CNAME record are to redirect all the traffic from different subdomains to their main Internet domain, or to use the webmail service of your hosting provider by using webmail.your-doman.com, for example. The latter will work only by creating a CNAME record for a subdomain since this kind of a record created for the main domain name renders it impossible to use email addresses.

CNAME Records in Web Hosting

Creating a CNAME record using our Linux web hosting service is extremely simple. Our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel has a section committed to the DNS records of your domain addresses, so you can set up a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted inside your account in just a few basic steps. You can find a video tutorial in the same section where you can see the process first-hand. This feature provides you with a number of opportunities - if you build a company site on our end, as an illustration, the staff can use their e-mails with the company domain address, not with the address of our mail server. If you decide to create an Internet site by using a different provider that offers online web design services, you can easily forward a domain address hosted here and use it for the site. Last, but not least, if you have a web-based store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you may create a CNAME record for the www subdomain and forward it to the main domain name, so all your clients are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server with our company and you want to set up a CNAME record, it will require no more than a few clicks to complete this task. The plans are handled using our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP in which you will discover a section committed to the DNS records of the domain names and subdomains hosted within the account. To create a CNAME record, you'll simply have to choose the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), enter where the latter is going to be forwarded to and save the modification. The new record is going to be active almost right away in our system and will propagate worldwide within a few hours. Editing or deleting an existing CNAME record inside the account is equally simple and takes a click. In the event you experience any difficulties, you can go through our comprehensive help article, see the short video on the topic that we have added in the Control Panel, or you can simply contact us for help.
