SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol employed to connect to a web server and execute different tasks via a command line. The protocol is popular with many knowledgeable users, since the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access could be used for a lot of things based on the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for instance, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the website hosting server permits it. When you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH may be used for just about everything - you can install software or restart specific services including the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed mainly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that permit you to employ the protocol if your laptop or computer is using a different Operating System too. The connection is created on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port although a number of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Web Hosting

When you have a web hosting account with us and you'd like to manage your content remotely using SSH, you can obtain SSH access to the account using your Hepsia Control Panel. If your plan does not come with this feature as standard, you can add it with a few mouse clicks through the Upgrades menu. In the SSH section of the Control Panel, you shall see the host, the port number and the username that you should use when you connect to the account. You can also choose what password you would like to use, considering that it doesn't have to be the same as the one for the account. We've prepared a number of Help articles where you can find each of the commands you will be able to use with a shared hosting package, as well as examples of how they are used. Furthermore, if SSH access is enabled for your account, you shall be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection by using a standard client like FileZilla, for instance.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is available as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server packages, while with others you can easily include it through the hosting CP if needed - even just for the current month. Either way, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the function with just one mouse click through the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same spot, you'll discover the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You will also find a box in which you may type the password which you want to use, as it doesn't have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better protection, you could also change it as frequently as you require. A full list of the commands that can be executed within a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a number of examples. An extra feature after SSH access is enabled shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client that supports this kind of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

All our VPS server plans feature SSH access as standard, so you shall not have to add any upgrades or enable anything - the second the server is set up and you receive its login information, you'll be able to connect using its main IP address and the login credentials that you have picked through the signup process. Because the VPS accounts feature full root-level access, there aren't any restrictions regarding the commands which you can run. Your server shall be isolated from the others on the physical machine, so you'll be able to manage virtually everything via a command line, including server-side software installations and reboots. This way, you may work with your files, databases and any applications that you install in a fast and risk-free way.
